Pre-Lactate Training Activator – The Lactic Acid Supplement for Athletes Who Refuse to Slow Down

A 26.5 g pre-training sachet built around the three things that decide how long you can hold a hard pace: intramuscular H⁺ buffering (L-carnosine + CarnoSyn® beta-alanine), hyperhydration (4 g GlyceroMax® glycerol) and ATP turnover (D-ribose, calcium pyruvate, L-carnitine, pantothenic acid). Thirteen ingredients at full research doses – not traces.

Take it 45 minutes before the session that scares you.

Who is this lactic acid supplement for?

Pick the headline that sounds like you.

Endurance athletesRunners, cyclists, triathletes, swimmers, rowers – anyone whose race is decided at or above lactate threshold.
Team & combat sportsRepeated sprints, late-game legs, the fourth round – when acidosis is the thing that ends the effort.
Strength & CrossFitHigh-rep sets, EMOMs, metcons – more quality reps before the burn shuts the set down.
Masters & active-healthMuscle carnosine and mitochondrial efficiency decline with age; support them and training feels like it used to.
Hot-weather & long eventsGlycerol hyperhydration helps you start with more body water and lose less performance as you sweat.

Why does lactic acid “burn” – and why does it stop you?

Lactate itself is not the villain – it is actually a fuel. The problem is the hydrogen ions (H⁺) produced alongside it during hard glycolytic work. As H⁺ accumulates, muscle pH drops, calcium handling and enzyme activity fall, and force output collapses. That is the burn, the heavy legs, the moment you back off the pace.

The best lactic acid supplement does not try to “stop” lactate. It raises your buffering capacity so the pH drop is slower and shallower, supplies the oxidative machinery so more pyruvate is burned aerobically instead of being shunted to lactate, and keeps you hydrated so blood volume and heat tolerance hold up. That is exactly how SCN™ Pre-Lactate Training Activator is built.

The 13 actives – what each one does for your lactate threshold

1. L-Carnosine – 1,500 mg

Carnosine (beta-alanyl-L-histidine) is the muscle’s own intracellular buffer. It accounts for a meaningful share of total buffering in fast-twitch fibres, mops up H⁺ as glycolysis accelerates, supports the sarcoplasmic-reticulum calcium pump that lets fibres keep contracting under acidic conditions, and scavenges reactive aldehydes produced by lipid peroxidation during hard work. Sprinters and power athletes carry naturally higher muscle carnosine; endurance athletes tend to carry less – which is exactly why supplementing it matters for you.

2. CarnoSyn® beta-alanine – 1,500 mg

Beta-alanine is the rate-limiting precursor for carnosine synthesis. CarnoSyn® is the patented, most-studied form of beta-alanine on the market. Meta-analyses of placebo-controlled trials show beta-alanine improves exercise capacity, with the strongest effect in efforts lasting roughly 30 seconds to 10 minutes – the intervals, climbs and finishing surges that define endurance racing – and additive benefits when combined with other buffers. Pairing beta-alanine (which raises carnosine over weeks) with L-carnosine (acute support) is how Pre-Lactate covers both today’s session and the next training block.

3. GlyceroMax® glycerol powder – 4,000 mg

Glycerol is a hyperhydration agent: it raises plasma osmolality slightly, so the kidneys retain more of the fluid you drink. Glycerol-induced hyperhydration consistently retains more body water than water alone, supporting plasma volume, heart-rate control and thermoregulation – especially in hot conditions and long events where losing more than 2% of body weight costs you pace. GlyceroMax® is the stable 65% powdered form, so you get a real 4 g dose in a single sachet. It also delivers the full, “pumped” muscle feel strength athletes love. Glycerol has been removed from the WADA prohibited list and is permitted in competition.

4. D-Ribose – 2,500 mg

Ribose is the five-carbon sugar backbone of ATP, ADP and AMP. Intense exercise drains the adenine-nucleotide pool, and rebuilding it is slow because the body makes ribose via the pentose phosphate pathway at a limited rate. Supplemental D-ribose bypasses that bottleneck. In a double-blind crossover trial in the Journal de la Société internationale de nutrition sportive (2017), D-ribose improved mean and peak power output across repeated high-intensity interval sessions and lowered perceived exertion versus dextrose.

5. Calcium pyruvate – 2,000 mg (1,300 mg pyruvic acid)

Pyruvate sits at the fork in the road: it either enters the mitochondria as acetyl-CoA to be burned aerobically, or is converted to lactate. Supplying extra pyruvate supports aerobic ATP production, glucose and protein transport into muscle, and has been studied for endurance capacity and reduced fatigue in prolonged exercise. The calcium salt also contributes 310 mg of calcium (39% NRV), which contributes to normal muscle function and normal energy-yielding metabolism.

6. Betaine HCl (trimethylglycine) – 1,500 mg

TMG is a methyl donor and osmolyte found in beetroot. It supports endogenous creatine synthesis and SAMe production, and acts as an osmoprotectant that helps cells hold water under heat and dehydration stress. Trials in trained men have reported improvements in power output, repeat-sprint capacity and muscular endurance with daily betaine at doses in this range.

7. L-Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate (OKG) – 1,000 mg

Hard, long training breaks down amino acids and releases ammonia, which is itself fatiguing to muscle and brain. Ornithine is the hub of the urea cycle that clears ammonia, and alpha-ketoglutarate feeds the Krebs cycle directly. A placebo-controlled trial published in Nutrition Research (2008) found ornithine supplementation reduced subjective fatigue and improved markers of energy metabolism after prolonged exercise. Ornithine is also converted to arginine, the precursor of nitric oxide.

8. L-Carnitine fumarate – 1,000 mg

Carnitine carries long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane for beta-oxidation. More fat oxidation at a given intensity spares glycogen and reduces the glycolytic flux that produces H⁺ in the first place. Fumarate is a Krebs-cycle intermediate, making this the “pure sport” carnitine form.

9. Phosphatidylserine (from soy lecithin) – 920 mg

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a membrane phospholipid concentrated in muscle and brain. In a double-blind trial in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (2006), 750 mg/day of soy PS for 10 days increased cycling time to exhaustion at 85% VO₂max from about 7:51 to 9:51 min – the first study to show an ergogenic effect of PS. Separate research shows PS blunts the cortisol response to exercise, supporting recovery and a better testosterone-to-cortisol ratio. Our 920 mg dose is above the amount used in the time-to-exhaustion study.

10. Alpha lipoic acid – 150 mg

Lipoic acid is a mitochondrial cofactor for the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex – the very enzyme that converts pyruvate into acetyl-CoA. It is also both water- and fat-soluble, regenerates vitamins C and E, and supports healthy glucose uptake into muscle, helping the carbohydrate you eat end up as glycogen.

11. Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) – 138.75 mg

B5 is the precursor of coenzyme A, without which neither pyruvate nor fatty acids can enter the Krebs cycle. Pantothenic acid contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and to normal mental performance (EU-authorised claims).

12. Policosanol (60% octacosanol) – 60 mg

Octacosanol is a long-chain alcohol from sugar cane and wheat germ with a long history in sports nutrition. Studies in athletes have reported improved reaction time, alertness and mood, and it supports fatty-acid utilisation for steady, long-lasting energy output.

13. AstaReal® astaxanthin – 0.25 mg (from 5 mg algae flour)

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid from Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae, with a uniquely high ORAC/TAC antioxidant capacity and a structure that spans the full cell membrane. The harder you breathe, the more reactive oxygen species you produce; astaxanthin helps protect muscle and mitochondrial membranes from that oxidative load. AstaReal® is the original, Swedish-produced natural astaxanthin.

The research behind Pre-Lactate Training Activator

Beta-alanine & exercise capacity – Systematic review and meta-analysis of 40 studies (1,461 participants): beta-alanine significantly improved exercise outcomes, with the largest effects in 0.5–10 min efforts and when combined with other buffers. Why SCN™ instead of a plain beta-alanine or bicarbonate product?

Most “lactic acid” supplements are one ingredient. Beta-alanine alone takes 4–8 weeks to work and does nothing for hydration or ATP supply. Bicarbonate alone buffers outside the cell and can upset the stomach. Pre-Lactate Training Activator stacks intracellular buffering (carnosine + beta-alanine), hyperhydration (glycerol + betaine), aerobic ATP production (ribose, pyruvate, carnitine, lipoic acid, B5), ammonia clearance (OKG), stress-hormone control (phosphatidylserine) and antioxidant protection (astaxanthin) in one sachet – at the doses the studies actually used. For the ultimate buffering stack, combine it with SCN™ Bicarb-Lytes¹⁰ Zero for extracellular buffering as well.

How to use

Mix 1 sachet (26.5 g) in 250 ml of room-temperature water, shake well and drink 45 minutes before training or competition.

  • Use before your hardest sessions: threshold intervals, hill repeats, race-pace swims, long rides in the heat, competition day.
  • Beta-alanine builds muscle carnosine over weeks – for the full effect, use consistently on training days for at least 4 weeks.
  • Drink to thirst during the session; glycerol works best when you are not starting dehydrated.
  • Stacks well with SCN™ Endurance Carbs, Carbo⁶-Lytes¹¹ and Bicarb-Lytes¹⁰ Zero.

A mild, harmless tingling (paraesthesia) from beta-alanine is normal and fades within an hour. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Not intended for children or pregnant/breastfeeding women. Keep out of reach of children.

Lactic acid supplement – frequently asked questions

Does a lactic acid supplement actually stop lactic acid?

No supplement stops lactate production, and you would not want it to – lactate is fuel. What Pre-Lactate does is raise your buffering capacity so the acid (H⁺) that comes with it is neutralised faster, and supply the mitochondria so more pyruvate is burned aerobically instead of becoming lactate. The result is the same: you hold a hard pace longer before the burn forces you to slow.

How quickly will I feel it?

Hydration, pump, focus and the ATP-support ingredients work from the first sachet. The beta-alanine component builds muscle carnosine progressively, so the buffering benefit grows over 4–8 weeks of consistent use.

Can I take it with sodium bicarbonate?

Yes – that is the ideal combination. Carnosine and beta-alanine buffer inside the muscle cell; bicarbonate buffers in the blood. Meta-analyses show the two together produce larger effects than either alone. SCN™ Bicarb-Lytes¹⁰ Zero is designed to stack with Pre-Lactate.

Is glycerol allowed in competition?

Yes. Glycerol was removed from the WADA Prohibited List and is permitted in and out of competition. Pre-Lactate contains no stimulants, caffeine or banned substances.

Is this suitable for women and masters athletes?

Yes. The formula contains no hormones or stimulants. Muscle carnosine and mitochondrial efficiency decline with age, which makes buffering and ATP support even more relevant for athletes over 40.

What about the tingling?

The tingling on skin shortly after drinking is paraesthesia from beta-alanine. It is harmless, dose-related and fades within about an hour. Drinking the sachet with a small snack reduces it.

Finish the session you used to quit.

13 research-dosed ingredients. One sachet. 45 minutes before you go.
