One bone health supplement, four very different reasons to take it
Running, cycling, triathlon, swimming
High training volume, sweat losses, long indoor or winter blocks and non-impact sports like cycling and swimming all put bone on the agenda. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal muscle function.
Through perimenopause and menopause
As oestrogen falls, the balance of bone remodelling shifts. Calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K and magnesium all contribute to the maintenance of normal bones — together, in one capsule.
Strong bones and muscles after 50
Bone density peaks between about 25 and 35 and gradually declines afterwards, while calcium absorption falls with age. Vitamin D contributes to normal absorption of calcium and to normal muscle function.
Vegan and lactose-free calcium
Lipocal™ is a calcium of non-animal origin, and every capsule is vegan — ideal if you avoid dairy, the main dietary source of calcium for most people.
What this bone health supplement does for you
- Calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K and magnesium each contribute to the maintenance of normal bones.
- Vitamina D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus, and to normal blood calcium levels — so the calcium you take can actually be used.
- Calcium, vitamin D and magnesium contribute to the maintenance of normal teeth.
- Vitamin D, calcium and magnesium contribute to normal muscle function — essential for every stride, pedal stroke and swim stroke.
- Magnesio contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to electrolyte balance and to normal psychological function.
- Calcium and magnesium contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism.
- Vitamina D contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
- Liposomal microencapsulated minerals (Lipocal™ and MagShape™) — highly dispersible, micronised forms designed for absorption and stomach comfort.
- 4000 IU of vitamin D3 and 180 µg of K2 — high-potency doses of pharmaceutical-grade ingredients, not token amounts.
- Vegan, lactose-free capsules, manufactured to the same standards as SCN™’s endurance sports range.
What’s inside Liposomal OsteoSure — every ingredient, every dose
Most bone health supplements stop at calcium and a little vitamin D. OsteoSure combines the five nutrients that work as a team in bone metabolism, at doses chosen to make a real difference.
Calcio microincapsulato Lipocal™ Liposomal
1800 mg Lipocal™ · providing 660 mg calcium · 82.5% NRV
About 99% of the calcium in your body is stored in your bones and teeth as hydroxyapatite, the mineral that gives the skeleton its strength. The remaining 1% circulates in blood, muscles and nerves, where it is needed for muscle contraction, nerve signalling and blood clotting. Your body cannot make calcium — it must come from food or supplements — and when circulating levels need topping up, the body draws on its bone reserve.
Why Lipocal™? Lipocal™ is a micronised, water-dispersible calcium (tricalcium phosphate) microencapsulated with sunflower lecithin. It is of non-animal origin, suitable for vegans, vegetarians and people who are lactose intolerant.
- Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones and teeth
- Contributes to normal muscle function and normal neurotransmission
- Contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and normal blood clotting
MagShape™ Liposomal Microencapsulated Magnesium
600 mg MagShape™ · providing 200 mg magnesium · 53.3% NRV
Around 60% of your body’s magnesium is held in bone, where it acts as a reservoir released into the blood when needed. Magnesium and calcium work hand in hand: magnesium is involved in the metabolism of calcium, is needed to convert vitamin D into its active form, and activates alkaline phosphatase, the enzyme involved in forming new bone mineral. That is why OsteoSure never gives calcium without magnesium.
Why MagShape™? MagShape™ is a highly concentrated, microencapsulated magnesium source (magnesium oxide with sunflower lecithin), giving a high elemental magnesium content with improved stability.
- Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth
- Contributes to normal muscle function and electrolyte balance
- Contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal psychological function
Vitamin D3 (as Cholecalciferol)
100 µg (4000 IU) · 2000% NRV
Vitamin D3 is the key that unlocks calcium. Only a fraction of the calcium you eat is absorbed by the gut, and without enough vitamin D even a calcium-rich diet can go to waste. Sunlight is the main source for most people — but indoor training, winter months, higher latitudes, sunscreen and ageing skin all reduce how much your body makes. Athletes who train indoors or before dawn are no exception.
OsteoSure provides 4000 IU of D3, the cholecalciferol form your skin naturally produces.
- Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus
- Contributes to normal blood calcium levels and to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth
- Contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function and the normal function of the immune system
Vitamina K2 (come menachinone)
180 µg · 240% NRV
Vitamin K2 is rare in the typical Western diet, yet it plays an essential part in bone metabolism. It activates osteocalcin, a protein made by bone-building cells that binds calcium into the bone matrix. In short: vitamin D helps you absorb calcium, and vitamin K2 helps put it where it belongs.
180 µg is the same daily amount used in a three-year study of vitamin K2 in postmenopausal women (see the research section below) — and one of the highest K2 doses you’ll find in a bone health supplement.
- Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones
- Vitamin K contributes to normal blood clotting
Soy Isoflavones 40% (from Glicina max L., seed)
60 mg
Soy isoflavones are plant compounds with a structure similar to oestrogen. Research has focused on them because oestrogen plays an important role in bone remodelling, and its decline at menopause is linked with faster bone loss. Isoflavones and equol (a compound some people’s gut bacteria make from them) have been studied for their involvement in calcium balance and bone formation, and a number of meta-analyses of trials in postmenopausal women have reported that soy isoflavones may slow the loss of bone mineral density after menopause, although results differ between studies.
OsteoSure includes 60 mg of a standardised 40% isoflavone extract to complete the formula.
How the five ingredients work together
Absorb
Vitamin D3 contributes to the normal absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the gut.
Activate
Magnesium helps convert vitamin D into its active form and is involved in calcium metabolism.
Direct
Vitamin K2 activates osteocalcin, the protein that binds calcium into the bone matrix.
Build
Lipocal™ calcium supplies the raw mineral that bone is made of.
Support
Soy isoflavones complete the formula with a plant compound widely studied in bone research.
Why runners, cyclists, triathletes and swimmers need a bone health supplement
Endurance training is great for the heart and lungs — but bone needs the right nutrients to adapt to the loads you put on it. At SCN™ we formulate for endurance athletes first, and OsteoSure answers a problem many of them overlook.
- Runners and marathon runners: thousands of foot strikes per session mean constant bone remodelling. Bone that is always rebuilding needs a steady supply of calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K and magnesium.
- Cyclists: cycling is non-impact, so it gives the skeleton little loading. Studies in competitive road cyclists have reported lower bone mineral density than in runners, and research has measured calcium losses through sweat during long rides (Barry et al., Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2011).
- Swimmers: training in water removes most of the impact that stimulates bone, and long indoor pool hours mean little sun exposure for vitamin D.
- Triathletes: two of your three disciplines are low-impact, and high total volume often comes with tight energy intake — another factor athletes and coaches watch closely for bone health.
- Everyone training through winter: early-morning sessions, indoor turbo and treadmill blocks and northern latitudes all limit vitamin D production in the skin.
OsteoSure fits next to your everyday SCN™ performance stack — take it with meals, away from your training-session products.
Your skeleton is a living organ — and it changes with age
Bone is constantly being remodelled: bone-building cells (osteoblasts) lay down new bone while bone-resorbing cells (osteoclasts) remove old bone. It takes around ten years for your whole skeleton to be renewed. Until about age 30, building outpaces resorption; after that, the balance gradually shifts, and bone density — highest between roughly 25 and 35 — slowly declines.
Several things speed this up with age: calcium absorption from the gut decreases, dietary calcium and vitamin D are often low, and less time outdoors means less vitamin D made in the skin. For women, menopause adds another factor: oestrogen stimulates bone-building cells and restrains bone-resorbing cells, so as oestrogen levels fall, its protective effect on bone structure falls too.
Reference intakes for calcium for adults typically sit around 950–1200 mg per day, depending on age, sex and country. OsteoSure’s 660 mg of calcium is designed to complement the calcium in your diet, together with the vitamin D, vitamin K and magnesium your body needs to use it. Combine it with a protein-rich diet and regular weight-bearing and strength exercise for the best foundation for strong bones at every age.
What studies say about the OsteoSure ingredients
Vitamin K2 at 180 µg for three years
A study published in Osteoporosis International randomly assigned 244 healthy postmenopausal women aged 55–65 to 180 µg of vitamin K2 (menaquinone-7) daily or a placebo for three years. The women taking K2 showed a smaller decline in bone mineral density and bone strength than those taking placebo.
Knapen MHJ et al., Osteoporosis International, 2013. OsteoSure provides the same 180 µg daily amount of vitamin K2.
Soy isoflavones after menopause
Meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials in postmenopausal women have reported that soy isoflavone intake may moderate the loss of bone mineral density, particularly at the lumbar spine, although findings vary with dose, duration and study population.
Summary of published meta-analyses on soy isoflavones and bone mineral density.
Calcium losses during endurance exercise
Research in trained cyclists found that prolonged exercise causes calcium loss through sweat and a rise in parathyroid hormone (the signal that draws calcium out of bone), and that taking calcium before exercise reduced that response.
Barry DW et al., Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2011.
Calcium and vitamin D work as a pair
Calcium builds and maintains bone, while vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. Even with adequate calcium intake, low vitamin D status limits how much of it the body can use — which is why OsteoSure delivers both, together with the magnesium and vitamin K2 they depend on.
