Citrulline Malate Benefits: L-Citrulline vs Citrulline Malate, Nitric Oxide, Ammonia Clearance and Endurance
Citrulline is the most efficient way to raise nitric oxide you can buy — more effective than arginine itself — and the only common supplement that simultaneously removes the ammonia that fatigues you. This guide explains the difference between L-citrulline base and citrulline malate, how they work, the 8 sport and 8 health benefits, and the four SCN™ formulas that deliver them.
What is L-citrulline, and what is citrulline malate?
L-citrulline is a non-protein amino acid first isolated from watermelon (Citrullus). It is an intermediate of the urea cycle, the liver pathway that converts toxic ammonia into urea. Unlike arginine, citrulline is not broken down by the gut or liver on absorption; it travels to the kidneys and is converted to arginine, then to nitric oxide (NO).
Citrulline malate bonds citrulline to malic acid, typically in a 2:1 or 1:1 ratio. Malate is a Krebs cycle intermediate (malate → oxaloacetate) that supports aerobic ATP production and lactate clearance. So the malate form delivers two mechanisms; the base form delivers a purer, higher citrulline dose per gram. SCN™ uses both.
How does citrulline work? Four mechanisms
1 · Nitric oxide & blood flow
Citrulline → arginine → NO relaxes blood vessels, increasing oxygen and nutrient delivery to working muscle and clearing metabolites faster.
2 · Ammonia detoxification
As a urea-cycle intermediate, citrulline accelerates the conversion of ammonia — a key fatigue toxin from amino-acid breakdown and AMP deamination — into urea.
3 · Aerobic ATP (malate)
Malate refills the Krebs cycle and supports oxidative pyruvate use instead of lactate formation.
4 · Muscle protein signalling
Citrulline stimulates the mTOR pathway and reduces hepatic uptake of amino acids, supporting muscle protein balance.
What are the 8 sport benefits of citrulline? (Citrulline malate benefits for athletes)
1 · More repetitions to failure
Meta-analysis of 8 trials: 6–8 g citrulline malate 40–60 min pre-exercise increased reps by ~6% versus placebo.
2 · Lower perceived exertion
Pooled analysis of 13 studies found significantly reduced RPE after citrulline.
3 · Less muscle soreness
Reduced soreness at 24 and 48 hours post-exercise in the same meta-analysis.
4 · Better oxygen delivery
NO-mediated vasodilation improves oxygen transport to muscle and brain during exercise.
5 · Less ammonia build-up
Supports clearance of the ammonia that causes heavy legs and mental fog late in long efforts.
6 · Faster lactate clearance
Malate supports the oxidative use of pyruvate and lactate removal.
7 · Supports strength endurance
Meta-analysis shows small but consistent improvements in strength-endurance outcomes.
8 · Supports growth hormone response
Citrulline increases the post-exercise GH rise, a signal for recovery and adaptation.
6 g citrulline malate — the full research dose
Activateur d'entraînement de pré-endurance gives 6000 mg citrulline malate 2:1 with 3 g arginine AKG, 2 g arginine nitrate, glucuronolactone and Senactiv®.
What are the 8 health benefits of citrulline?
1 · Healthy blood pressure
Meta-analysis shows L-citrulline supports healthy systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
2 · Endothelial function
Supports NO production and arterial flexibility, markers of vascular health.
3 · Circulation
Better blood flow to extremities, brain and organs.
4 · Sexual health
Supports erectile function via improved blood flow in clinical studies.
5 · Ammonia and liver support
Supports the urea cycle and nitrogen balance.
6 · Muscle maintenance with age
Citrulline supports muscle protein synthesis in older adults.
7 · Immune function
Arginine derived from citrulline is needed for immune-cell function and wound healing.
8 · Healthy ageing cardiovascular system
Supports arterial health, a key component of healthy ageing.

Citrulline for your sport
🏃 Runners
Lower RPE at a given pace, less soreness after hard sessions and better oxygen delivery. Pre-Endurance Training Activator before intervals; Race Day before 5k–half-marathon starts.
🚴 Cyclists
Citrulline’s blood-flow effect improves oxygen delivery to the quads and clears metabolites between surges. Combine with nitrate (Krebs Cycle Accelerator⁴⁰) for both NO pathways at once.
🏊♂️🚴🏃 Triathletes
Ammonia accumulates over hours; citrulline’s urea-cycle role helps clear it so the run leg stays sharp. Race Day in transition, Pre-Endurance before long bricks.
🏊 Swimmers
Pump and oxygen delivery matter in repeated sets, and reduced soreness means better back-to-back sessions. Citrulline malate 40–60 minutes before the main set.
🏅 Marathon runners
Late-race ammonia is a major driver of the “fog” after 30 km. Citrulline plus ornithine AKG (Krebs Cycle Accelerator⁴⁰) supplies the whole urea cycle before the gun.
How much citrulline should I take, and which form?
For performance: 6–8 g citrulline malate (≈3–4 g citrulline) or 3–4 g L-citrulline base, 40–60 minutes before exercise. For blood pressure and vascular health: 3–6 g citrulline daily. Choose malate when you want the Krebs-cycle effect for endurance; choose base for the purest citrulline dose per gram. SCN™ combines them so you get both. Citrulline is extremely well tolerated — unlike arginine it does not cause GI upset even at high doses.
Frequently asked questions about citrulline
Is citrulline malate better than L-citrulline?
Malate adds an aerobic-energy mechanism and is the form used in most performance trials; base delivers more citrulline per gram. For endurance, malate; for pure NO, base. Both are in Krebs Cycle Accelerator⁴⁰.
Why not just take arginine?
Oral arginine is largely destroyed by arginase in the gut and liver. Citrulline bypasses this and actually raises plasma arginine more effectively.
Does citrulline cause tingling or jitters?
No. It is not a stimulant and does not cause paraesthesia (that is beta-alanine).
Is citrulline doping-free?
Yes. It is a natural amino acid not on the WADA list. SCN™ products are 100% doping-free.
Can I take citrulline every day?
Yes. Daily use is safe and supports vascular health between sessions.
