HydroCurc®: the curcumin your body can actually absorb
HydroCurc is a highly bioavailable curcumin made with LipiSperse® dispersion technology. It solves the single biggest problem with turmeric supplements — poor absorption — and has been tested in humans for both blood levels and exercise recovery. Here is how it works, what the science says, and why SCN™ chose it for endurance athletes.
What is HydroCurc® curcumin?
Curcumin is the main active polyphenol of turmeric (Cúrcuma longa), the golden root used in cooking and traditional medicine for thousands of years. Turmeric contains three related compounds called curcuminoids — curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin — and together they are responsible for most of turmeric’s antioxidant and inflammation-balancing effects.
HydroCurc is a curcumin extract developed by Pharmako Biotechnologies in Australia. It combines a high-purity curcuminoid extract with LipiSperse®, a patented, food-grade dispersion technology. The result is a cold-water-dispersible curcumin with a very high active load: most of each gram is curcuminoids, not carrier. The HydroCurc® used in SCN™ Relief Herbal is standardised to 85% curcuminoids and 60% curcumin.
Why is curcumin bioavailability such a problem?
Bioavailability is the share of an ingredient that actually reaches your bloodstream in an active form. For curcumin, it is famously low, for three reasons:
- It hates water. Curcumin is lipophilic (fat-loving). In the watery environment of the stomach and intestine its crystals clump together and cannot cross the gut wall.
- It is metabolised fast. The gut wall and liver rapidly convert curcumin into conjugates that are excreted.
- Turmeric itself is weak. Turmeric powder contains less than 5% curcumin, so spice or plain turmeric capsules deliver very little.
That is why “turmeric supplements” so often disappoint. The question is never just how much curcumin is in a capsule — it is how much your body can absorb.
How does LipiSperse® technology work?
LipiSperse® is made of molecules with two ends: one oil-loving, one water-loving. The oil-loving end attaches to the surface of each curcumin crystal, while the water-loving end faces outward. This changes how the crystals behave in liquid — instead of sticking together, they repel one another and stay evenly dispersed. More individual particles in contact with the gut lining means more curcumin available for absorption.
Because the coating is thin, HydroCurc® keeps a very high proportion of active curcuminoids. Many other bioavailability systems (phytosomes, some micelles, cyclodextrins) are mostly carrier and contain 20–30% curcuminoids or less, which means more capsules for the same active dose.
What did the HydroCurc® pharmacokinetic study show?
In a randomised, double-blind study published in the Revista Europea de Nutrición, 18 healthy adults took either HydroCurc® or the same curcumin extract without LipiSperse®, followed by a crossover phase. Blood was sampled for 24 hours. HydroCurc® produced significantly higher plasma curcuminoids, with a peak (Cmax) of 807 ng/mL versus 318 ng/mL in the crossover phase — about 2.5 times higher — and reached that peak in roughly one hour.
SCN™ Relief Herbal combines HydroCurc® with 1,800 mg Boswellia, bromelain, papain, ginger, rosemary and BioPerine®.
How does curcumin work in the body?
Curcumin is a “multi-target” molecule. Rather than blocking one enzyme like a painkiller, it gently turns down several parts of the inflammatory network at once:
- NF-κB: curcumin calms this “master switch” transcription factor, which drives the production of inflammatory messengers.
- Cytokines: it lowers pro-inflammatory signals such as TNF-α and IL-6, and can raise anti-inflammatory IL-10.
- COX-2 and LOX enzymes: it reduces the activity of enzymes that produce prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
- Nrf2: it switches on the body’s own antioxidant defence genes (glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase).
- Direct antioxidant action: its chemical structure neutralises free radicals that damage cell membranes, proteins and DNA.
For athletes, this matters because hard training creates a short, intense burst of inflammation and oxidative stress in muscle. That response is part of adaptation — but when it is excessive or never fully resolves, it shows up as soreness, heavy legs, niggles and lost training days.
What are the sport benefits of HydroCurc® curcumin?
1. Does curcumin reduce muscle soreness (DOMS)?
Yes — this is the best-supported sport benefit. In the HydroCurc® exercise trial (28 trained men, double-blind, placebo-controlled), participants who drank HydroCurc® before and after exhausting leg exercise rated their overall muscle pain lower at 48 and 72 hours. Several meta-analyses of curcumin trials reach a similar conclusion for delayed-onset muscle soreness.
2. Can curcumin lower lactate after hard efforts?
In the same study, post-exercise capillary lactate was lower with HydroCurc® (7.4 vs 8.8 mmol/L), and the curcumin group maintained higher power in the final set of leg presses. Researchers suggested this may let athletes train at higher intensities.
3. Does curcumin help you return to training sooner?
Less pain, less swelling (thigh circumference was reduced at 24 and 48 hours) and better-maintained strength all point the same way: a quicker return to quality sessions. Over a season, a few saved training days add up.
4. Does curcumin change inflammatory markers after exercise?
HydroCurc® increased blood levels of IL-10, an anti-inflammatory cytokine, 24 hours after exercise. Other curcumin trials have reported lower IL-6 and TNF-α after damaging exercise.
5. Does curcumin protect against oxidative stress from high training volume?
Endurance athletes can produce huge amounts of reactive oxygen species during long sessions. Curcumin both scavenges free radicals directly and upregulates the body’s own antioxidant enzymes through Nrf2.
6. Can curcumin support joint comfort under repetitive load?
Thousands of foot strikes or pedal strokes per session stress knees, hips and ankles. Curcumin has been studied extensively for joint comfort and function, and works especially well alongside boswellia, which targets a different inflammatory enzyme (5-LOX).
7. Is curcumin a smarter option than routine painkillers?
Regular use of NSAID painkillers in endurance sport is linked to gut irritation, kidney stress — especially when dehydrated — and may interfere with tissue healing. Curcumin offers a food-based way to support recovery without those concerns. (Never stop prescribed medication without medical advice.)
8. Can curcumin support gut comfort during long events?
Long, hot efforts reduce blood flow to the gut and can disrupt the gut lining. Early research suggests curcumin supports intestinal barrier integrity and a balanced gut inflammatory response — relevant to “runner’s gut” and race-day fuelling.
How can HydroCurc® help different endurance athletes?
Runners
Running is uniquely eccentric: every landing lengthens the quads and calves under load, which is exactly the type of exercise that causes DOMS. HydroCurc® supports recovery from downhill sessions, track work and long runs, and helps keep knees and Achilles comfortable as mileage builds.
Cyclists
High training volumes, back-to-back days and stage races mean little time to recover. Curcumin’s support for muscle soreness, lactate handling and oxidative stress fits blocks of consecutive hard days, and helps keep knees and lower back comfortable on long rides.
Triathletes
Three sports means three sets of stress — shoulders in the pool, quads on the bike, eccentric damage on the run. A multi-target ingredient like curcumin supports whole-body recovery rather than one muscle group.
Swimmers
Swimmers accumulate huge numbers of shoulder rotations. Curcumin supports joint and soft-tissue comfort and recovery between double sessions, while its antioxidant activity helps during high-volume phases.
Marathon runners
The marathon causes measurable muscle damage and an inflammatory spike that can last days. Using HydroCurc® during the final training weeks and the days after race day supports recovery so you can return to running sooner.

What are the health benefits of curcumin?
1. Does curcumin support a healthy inflammatory balance?
Meta-analyses of randomised trials show curcumin supplementation lowers C-reactive protein (CRP), IL-6 and TNF-α in adults. Chronic low-grade inflammation is a common thread in many age-related problems, so this is curcumin’s foundational benefit.
2. Is curcumin good for joints?
Curcumin and turmeric extracts are among the most studied botanicals for joint comfort and physical function, including in adults with knee joint wear. Results are strongest with well-absorbed forms and with combinations such as curcumin plus boswellia.
3. Can curcumin support memory and brain health?
Bioavailable curcumin has improved working memory, attention and mood in placebo-controlled trials in healthy older adults. Curcumin also raises BDNF, a growth factor for brain cells, in experimental studies.
4. Can curcumin support mood?
Several randomised trials and meta-analyses report improvements in mood and feelings of anxiety with curcumin, likely linked to its effects on inflammation, oxidative stress and neurotransmitter balance.
5. Does curcumin support heart and blood-vessel health?
Curcumin supports endothelial function — the ability of blood vessels to relax and widen. In one trial in postmenopausal women, curcumin improved flow-mediated dilation to a similar degree as an aerobic exercise programme.
6. Does curcumin support the liver and digestion?
Curcumin stimulates bile flow and gallbladder contraction, which helps digest fats, and has been shown to support healthy liver enzyme levels in adults with excess liver fat.
7. Can curcumin support blood sugar and metabolic health?
Trials in adults at metabolic risk show curcumin can support insulin sensitivity, healthy fasting glucose and blood lipids, alongside diet and exercise.
8. Is curcumin an anti-ageing nutrient?
“Inflammaging” — the slow rise of inflammation with age — and oxidative damage are two hallmarks of ageing biology. By working on both, curcumin is one of the most researched polyphenols in longevity science.
HydroCurc® vs other curcumin forms: which is best absorbed?
| Form | How it works | Active load | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turmeric powder | Whole root | <5% curcumin | Very low dose, poor absorption |
| Standard 95% extract | Concentrated curcuminoids | ~95% | High dose but poorly absorbed alone |
| Extract + piperine | Slows curcumin breakdown | ~95% | Common and affordable; relies on piperine |
| Phytosome / lecithin complexes | Phospholipid carrier | ~20% | Good absorption, low active load per capsule |
| HydroCurc | LipiSperse® dispersion | 85–90% | High absorption + high active load; human PK and exercise data |
How much curcumin should you take?
Human studies on curcumin typically use 500–1,500 mg of curcuminoids a day, but with highly bioavailable forms lower doses can reach useful blood levels. More is not always better: a 2025 dose–response study of another enhanced curcumin found the higher dose improved biochemical recovery markers but not performance recovery, suggesting a “sweet spot” exists.
In SCN™ Relief Herbal: 2 Vcaps a day provide 240 mg HydroCurc® (204 mg curcuminoids) for everyday use and training blocks; 6 Vcaps a day for up to 6 days provide 720 mg HydroCurc® (612 mg curcuminoids) for intensive periods. Take with a meal.
Is HydroCurc® curcumin safe?
Curcumin has been used safely in many clinical trials and is generally well tolerated. EFSA has set an acceptable daily intake for curcumin as a food colour of 3 mg per kg of body weight per day. Mild stomach upset is the most common side effect. Talk to your doctor first if you:
- take blood thinners or anti-platelet medicines, or have surgery planned
- have gallstones or a bile-duct obstruction
- have a liver condition (rare cases of liver injury have been reported with turmeric supplements)
- take diabetes medication, or have iron deficiency
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
Why does SCN™ combine HydroCurc® with Boswellia, bromelain and papain?
Curcumin is powerful, but it does not cover every inflammatory pathway. Boswellia serrata blocks 5-LOX and leukotrienes; bromelain and papain are proteolytic enzymes that support tissue fluid balance and clearance; ginger adds gingerols; rosemary extract boosts antioxidant defences. That is why SCN™ built Alivio Herbal as a complete multi-pathway formula rather than another turmeric capsule.

HydroCurc® curcumin — frequently asked questions
What is HydroCurc®?
HydroCurc® is a high-purity curcumin extract combined with LipiSperse® dispersion technology, developed by Pharmako Biotechnologies. It keeps curcumin particles dispersed in water so they are absorbed much better than standard curcumin.
Is HydroCurc® better than curcumin with black pepper?
They work differently. Piperine slows curcumin’s breakdown, while HydroCurc® improves how curcumin disperses and is absorbed in the first place. HydroCurc® does not need piperine; in a human study it delivered about 2.5 times higher peak blood curcuminoids than the same standard extract.
How fast does HydroCurc® work?
HydroCurc® reaches peak blood levels about one hour after a dose. In the exercise study, muscle pain was lower at 48 and 72 hours after training.
Is HydroCurc® good for athletes?
Yes. It is one of the few curcumin forms with a placebo-controlled exercise trial, showing lower muscle soreness, lower post-exercise lactate and better-maintained power.
Should I take curcumin before or after exercise?
In the HydroCurc® study it was taken both before and after training. For daily use, taking it with meals at regular times is the simplest approach.
Can I take curcumin every day?
Yes, curcumin is commonly used daily within recommended amounts. Check with your doctor if you take medication or have a medical condition.
