Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AAKG) Benefits: Nitric Oxide, Strength, Ammonia Control and the Krebs Cycle in One Molecule
Arginine is the direct precursor of nitric oxide — but plain arginine is largely destroyed before it reaches your blood. Bonding it to alpha-ketoglutarate changes the equation: AAKG delivers the NO precursor और a Krebs-cycle intermediate that traps ammonia inside the muscle. This guide explains the mechanism, the 8 sport and 8 health benefits of AAKG, and the four SCN™ formulas that contain it.
What is arginine alpha-ketoglutarate?
L-arginine is a conditionally essential amino acid with more jobs than almost any other: substrate for nitric oxide synthase (NOS), precursor of creatine (with glycine and methionine), intermediate of the urea cycle, precursor of polyamines and proline, and a stimulus for growth hormone and insulin release. Its weakness is bioavailability — the enzyme arginase in the gut and liver destroys much of an oral dose.
Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) is the Krebs-cycle intermediate between isocitrate and succinyl-CoA, and the body’s primary acceptor of amino groups (AKG + NH₃ → glutamate). Bonding arginine to AKG improves stability and gives the molecule a second, metabolic function. AAKG was developed in clinical nutrition before becoming a sports-nutrition staple.
How does AAKG work?
1 · Nitric oxide
Arginine + O₂ → citrulline + NO via NOS. NO relaxes vascular smooth muscle, increasing blood flow, oxygen and nutrient delivery and metabolite clearance.
2 · Creatine synthesis
Arginine donates its amidino group to glycine (via AGAT) in the first step of creatine synthesis.
3 · Ammonia buffering (AKG)
AKG binds ammonia to form glutamate and glutamine in the muscle — reducing the fatigue toxin at source.
4 · Krebs-cycle anaplerosis (AKG)
AKG refills the cycle’s intermediates, supporting sustained aerobic ATP during long exercise.
What are the 8 sport benefits of AAKG? (Arginine alpha-ketoglutarate benefits for athletes)
1 · Greater maximal strength
8 weeks of 12 g/day AAKG significantly increased 1RM bench press versus placebo in resistance-trained men.
2 · Higher anaerobic peak power
Wingate peak power improved significantly in the same trial.
3 · Better blood flow and pump
NO-mediated vasodilation improves perfusion of working muscle during and after sets.
4 · Oxygen and nutrient delivery
More blood flow means more oxygen for endurance and more amino acids and glucose for recovery.
5 · Ammonia control
AKG traps ammonia in the muscle, complementing citrulline and ornithine in the urea cycle.
6 · Krebs-cycle support
Anaplerosis supports aerobic energy in the late stages of long events.
7 · Creatine precursor
Supports endogenous creatine production alongside betaine and methionine.
8 · Growth hormone and recovery
Arginine supports the exercise-induced GH response and nitrogen balance.
3 g AAKG + 6 g citrulline malate + 2 g arginine nitrate
Pre-Endurance Training Activator hits every nitric-oxide pathway at full dose, with glucuronolactone, Senactiv® and a full B-complex.
What are the 8 health benefits of arginine AKG? (Arginine alpha-ketoglutarate benefits for health)
1 · Vascular health
Supports endothelial function and healthy circulation.
2 · Healthy blood pressure support
NO production supports normal blood pressure within the healthy range.
3 · Sexual health
Arginine-derived NO supports erectile function and libido.
4 · Immune function
Arginine is essential for T-cell function and wound healing.
5 · Tissue repair
Precursor of proline (collagen) and polyamines (cell proliferation).
6 · Ammonia and liver support
Urea-cycle intermediate — supports nitrogen handling.
7 · Healthy ageing
AKG is studied for mitochondrial function and healthy ageing; arginine supports vascular ageing.
8 · Metabolic health
Arginine supports insulin sensitivity and glucose handling.

AAKG for your sport
🏃 Runners
Blood flow to the legs and ammonia control late in the run. AAKG works best combined with citrulline — Pre-Endurance before intervals, Race Day before races.
🚴 Cyclists
Peak power and strength gains (Campbell trial) plus oxygen delivery for climbs. The triple-NO stack in Pre-Endurance Training Activator covers sprint and endurance demands.
🏊♂️🚴🏃 Triathletes
Hours of exercise drain Krebs intermediates and build ammonia — AKG addresses both while arginine keeps NO up. Krebs Cycle Accelerator⁴⁰ before the start, Race Day in T1 for long-course.
🏊 Swimmers
The strength and power benefits shown with AAKG translate to starts, turns and sprint sets; NO improves recovery between repeats.
🏅 Marathon runners
AAKG’s AKG component is the marathoner’s friend — ammonia trapping and Krebs refilling in the final 10 km, with the complete urea-cycle trio in Krebs Cycle Accelerator⁴⁰.
How much AAKG should I take?
The strength/power trial used 12 g/day (two 6 g doses) for 8 weeks. Acute single doses of 3 g show little effect alone, which is why SCN™ combines AAKG with citrulline malate and arginine nitrate — raising NO through three routes at once. Take 30–45 minutes pre-exercise. AAKG is well tolerated; very high arginine doses can cause GI upset in some people, which the AKG salt and the citrulline-heavy design minimise.
Frequently asked questions about arginine AKG
AAKG vs L-arginine — what’s the difference?
AAKG is arginine bonded to alpha-ketoglutarate. The AKG adds ammonia buffering and Krebs-cycle support and improves stability; it is the form used in the strength/power trial.
Should I take AAKG or citrulline?
Both. Citrulline is the more reliable way to raise plasma arginine; AAKG supplies arginine directly plus AKG. SCN™ formulas combine them.
Does AAKG cause a “pump”?
With sufficient dose and alongside citrulline/nitrate, yes — NO-mediated vasodilation increases muscle blood flow during training.
Is AAKG doping-free?
Yes. It is an amino-acid salt not on the WADA list. SCN™ products are 100% doping-free.
Is AAKG safe long-term?
Yes — 8 weeks at 12 g/day showed no adverse blood-chemistry changes. People with herpes simplex may find arginine triggers outbreaks; consult a physician.
